Aussie security companies look set for a business bonanza, as four federal agencies prepare to replace dozens of legacy cyber security systems with internet gateways that can protect multiple agencies.
A 2009 review of Canberra's security provisions recommended reducing 124 individual agency gateways down to just eight - the minimum number considered necessary for operational efficiency, reliability and security.
Eight lead agencies - the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, Australian Federal Police, Australian Taxation Office and the Departments of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Defence, Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, Human Services and Prime Minister and Cabinet - were appointed in October 2010.
