Cybersecurity partnership to improve anti-hacking systems‎

To develop new methods to protect computer systems against hacking and cyberattacks, the university’s Maryland Cybersecurity Center has teamed up with the Baltimore-based CyberPointInternational Co. to launch collaborative research projects with faculty and students.
CyberPoint, which has about 90 employees, develops technology products and research aimed at tackling problems of online privacy, security and unauthorized access. While university officials have yet to begin any projects with the company, members of both sides of the partnership aim to enhance their research by covering different aspects of cybersecurity issues, including computer science, engineering, social sciences, economics and public policy.
“We believe strongly in an interdisciplinary approach to research in cybersecurity, that brings government, academia and industry together,” said Mark Raugas, the director of research atCyberPoint. “[We’re] excited to collaborate with UMD students and faculty as part of MC2.”
The cybersecurity center, also known as MC2, has partnered with 12 corporations — including Google, Lockheed Martin and other local companies — to develop new educational programs, research and innovative technologies to protect against cyberattacks.
“Part of the mission of the cybersecurity center is to extend outreach and to engage local industry in solving cybersecurity problems,” said MC2 Director and computer science professor Michael Hicks, who noted students involved in the research projects may also get employment opportunities with partnering companies after graduation.
